Operation of vehicles when emergency vehicle parked.

A BILL
for
1 AN ACT relating to
operation of vehicles; providing for
2
operation of vehicles when approaching a parked emergency
3
vehicle; and providing for an effective date.
5 Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Wyoming:
6
7 Section 1. W.S. 31-5-224(a) is amended to read:
8
9 31-5-224. Operation of vehicles upon
approach of
10 authorized emergency vehicles.
11
12 (a) Upon the
immediate approach of an authorized
13 emergency vehicle making use of audible or
visual signals
14 meeting the requirements of W.S. 31-5-928
and 31-5-952, the
15 driver of every other vehicle shall yield
the right-of-way
16 and shall immediately drive to a position
parallel to, and

1 as
close as possible to, the right-hand edge or curb of the
2
roadway clear of any intersection and shall stop and remain
3 in
that position until the authorized emergency vehicle has
4
passed, except when otherwise directed by a police officer.
5 When an authorized emergency vehicle making use of
visual
6 signals meeting the above requirements is parked,
the
7 driver of every other vehicle, as soon as
it is safe:
8
9 (i) When driving on an
interstate highway or
10 other highway with more
than two (2) lanes traveling in the
11 direction of the
emergency vehicle, shall merge into the
12 lane farthest from the
emergency vehicle, except when
13 otherwise
directed by a police officer;
14
15 (ii) When driving on a two (2) lane road, slow
16 to speed that
is twenty (20) miles less than the
posted
17 speed limit, except when
otherwise directed by a police
18 officer.

20 Section 2. This act is effective July 1, 2001.
