Catch Title:       Obstetric subsidy.

 

Subject:  Creates a temporary program to provide additional Medicaid funding for obstetric services.

 

Summary/Major Elements:

 

This act:

 

·        Provides an additional $2,500.00 per delivery in Medicaid compensation to obstetric physicians as follows:

 

·        Physician must average fewer than 50 child deliveries per year from 2001-2003;

 

·        Additional payment applies to each physician's first ten deliveries during the period July 1, 2004, through June 30, 2005;

 

·        Physician must be located at least 30 miles from another physician providing obstetric services.

 

·        Authorizes department of health to purchase medical malpractice "tail" insurance coverage for a physician who agrees to return to provide obstetric services in a community without those services.

 

 

Comments:

 

This act requires a report from the department of health to the joint labor, health and social services committee if the funds appropriated for the program are expended before the one-year period of eligibility.
