FISCAL NOTE

The fiscal impact is indeterminable, as it is dependent upon; 1) the number of peace officers who become total disabled in the line of duty, and 2) the number of their qualifying surviving dependents who apply for this benefit.

The Department of Employment was able to identify a total of three peace officers on permanent total disability in the last ten years.  The Wyoming Retirement System identified a total of 31 peace officers retiring with a duty related disability in the past 4 years (8 in 2003, 10 in 2004, 2 in 2005, and 11 in 2006), resulting in an average of almost 8 per year over the four year period. The number of potentially qualifying dependents is unknown.

The cost of tuition and fees per student at the University of Wyoming is estimated at $1,475 per semester ($2,950 per year) for FY 2007, and is estimated to increase roughly 3.0 percent per year. The cost of tuition and fees per student at the community colleges is estimated at $964 per semester ($1,928 per year) for FY 2008, and is estimated to increase by 5.0% per year.
