FISCAL NOTE

The fiscal impact is indeterminable, as it is dependent upon; 1) the number of firefighters and emergency medical technicians who suffer a qualifying disability in the line of duty, and 2) the number of their qualifying surviving dependents who apply for this benefit.

The Department of Employment, Division of Workers' Safety and Compensation, conducted an ad hoc data search for both paid and volunteer firemen and emergency medical technicians. They identified a total of two individuals receiving disability benefits from fiscal year 2002 through fiscal year 2007, one on permanent partial disability and one on permanent total disability.

The Department of Fire Prevention & Electrical Safety conducted a telephone survey of fire departments to identify firefighters who have suffered a disability in the last 5 years. They identified three firefighters with a partial or permanent disability suffered in the line of duty. Of these three, two had no dependents and one had an unknown number of dependents.
