Subject:   Hathaway administrative reporting requirements and implementation of related programs attached to Hathaway student scholarships.

 

Summary/Major Elements:

 

·         In 2008, American sign language was added as a component of the Hathaway success curriculum foreign language requirement for student scholarship eligibility.  A task force of the state superintendent was also established to effectuate the delivery of American sign language instruction to high school students;

·         The task force is continued through June 30, 2010, to continue implementation of American sign language instruction by addressing teacher certification, course accreditation and instruction delivery, with $25,000 appropriated from the foundation program account and up to an equal amount from any available non-general or foundation account funds;

·         $157,000 is appropriated from the foundation account to the department of education to establish a transcript data center for common course coding for purposes of implementing success curriculum requirements statewide and to comply with required Hathaway reporting requirements;

·         $50,000 is appropriated from the foundation account to the department for establishing student career assessments at the eighth grade level in implementing the required eighth grade unit of study in post secondary preparation;

·         $30,000 is appropriated from the foundation account to the department for expansion of WORKKEYS job skills assessment to high school seniors interested in attaining certification in career readiness as offered through the department of workforce services.

 

Comments:

·         The department is required to report to the joint education committee on the expenditure of appropriated funds and the status of and recommendations for programs receiving funds.
