"(iii)  "Concussion" means a type of traumatic brain injury or head injury that:

(A)  Is caused by a blow, jolt or motion to the head or body that causes the brain to move rapidly in the skull;

(B)  Disrupts normal brain functioning and alters the mental state of the individual, causing the individual to experience either:

(I)  A period of observed or self-reported symptoms that include:

(1)  Transient confusion, disorientation, or impaired consciousness;

(2)  Dysfunction of memory around the time of injury; and

(3) Loss of consciousness lasting less than thirty (30) minutes;

(II)  Any one (1) of four (4) types of symptoms of a headache, including:

(1)  Physical symptoms, such as headache, fatigue or dizziness;

(2)  Cognitive symptoms, such as memory disturbance or slowed thinking;

(3)  Emotional symptoms, such as irritability or sadness; and

(4) Difficulty sleeping.".

21-3-110.  Duties of boards of trustees.

(a)  The board of trustees in each school district shall:

(xxx)  Adopt protocols to address risks associated with concussions and other head injuries resulting from athletic injuries.  The protocols shall:

(A)  Include training of coaches and athletic trainers to facilitate the recognition of symptoms of concussions;

(B)  Address restrictions concerning participation in school athletic events after suffering a concussion or head injury;

(C)  Include means for providing to students and parents information on head injuries and concussions and related restrictions on participation in athletic activities.".  HARSHMAN, GREEAR
