Source of Expenditure Increase:
Replacement of existing speed limit and dynamic message signs where needed.
Assumptions:
The proposed bill requires the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) to perform an engineering study to identify those sections of interstate highway that can accommodate eighty (80) miles per hour speed limits. This engineering study is estimated at $30,000 and does not include the cost of follow-up engineering studies to evaluate the impact on the road surface of the increased speed limit. WYDOT would then be required to replace existing seventy-five (75) miles per hour speed limit signs, both static signs as well as non-electronic variable message signs. Though the actual cost will fluctuate based on the engineering study to identify sections of road capable of handling eighty miles per hour speeds, the estimate to change 330 static signs and 20 non-electronic variable message signs is $80,000.
Note: The cost estimate does not include future construction costs to design new sections of roadway to accommodate the increase to eighty miles per hour speed limit. These construction costs are indeterminable at this time.
