Special license plates for firefighters.

                                     A BILL
                                        
                                       for

 1  AN ACT relating to motor vehicle license plates; authorizing

 2  special license plates to be issued to firefighters;

 3  specifying requirements; and providing for an effective

 4  date.

 5

 6  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Wyoming:

 7

 8       Section 1.  W.S. 31-2-218 is created to read:

 9     

10       31-2-218.  Firefighter's license plates.

11

12  (a)  A firefighter employed by a city, county or duly

13  created fire protection district, a volunteer firefighter as

14  defined by W.S. 35-9-601(a)(i) or a retired firefighter may

15  apply for distinctive license plates for any motor vehicle

16  owned by him upon registration of the vehicle. If the

17  firefighter became a member of a bonafide fire department

 1  after January 1, 1995, he shall have a minimum of one (1)

 2  year on the fire department and be firefighter one certified

 3  or engine boss wildfire certified in order to apply for the

 4  license plate. The fire chief or his designated assistant

 5  shall sign a written statement that the applicant is

 6  eligible to obtain the license plate. These license plates

 7  shall be displayed upon the vehicle for which they are

 8  issued. The license plates shall bear a distinctive symbol

 9  and letters identifying the registrant as a firefighter.

11       (b)  Application for license plates under subsection

12  (a) of this section shall be annually made to the county

13  treasurer as provided by W.S. 31-2-201. The written

14  statement of eligibility required under subsection (a) of

15  this subsection shall be presented to the county treasurer

16  before a license plate may be issued. Application forms

17  shall be available at all county treasurer's offices. The

18  normal registration fees and the fee required under W.S.

19  31-3-102(a)(viii) shall accompany each application.

21  (c)  All applications for special license plates

22  provided by this section shall be made directly to the

23  county treasurer at least thirty (30) days before

24  registration of the vehicle expires.  The department may

 1  prepare any special forms and issue any rules and

 2  regulations necessary to carry out this section.

 3

 4       (d)  A license plate issued under this section shall

 5  meet the Wyoming department of transportation's requirements

 6  under W.S. 31-2-217(d) relating to the symbol or letters

 7  appearing on the license plate.

 9       Section 2.  This act is effective January 1, 2000.
