PROPOSED INTERIM COMMITTEE STUDIES

2014 INTERIM

 

 

SELECT COMMITTEE ON TRIBAL RELATIONS

 

Standard Budget:     $10,000.00

 

Priority #: 1     General Responsibilities

 

Created by the Management Council, the Select Committee on Tribal Relations works with the Eastern Shoshone Indian Tribe, the Northern Arapaho Indian Tribe and various state agencies to address services and needs on the Wind River Indian Reservation.  The Committee addresses health and safety, water (including potable water to homes), education, transportation, gaming, communications, minerals, revenue, economic development and other issues that are a concern to the citizens on and near the Reservation.

 

Priority #: 2     Health

 

The Committee will examine issues relating to health care, including diabetes and nutrition, and will study opportunities for expanding and improving access to healthcare and mental health and substance abuse services.

 

Priority #: 3     Infrastructure

 

The Committee will receive information and updates on the maintenance and development of public utility infrastructure, including facilities for the provision of natural gas, broadband, water and sewage.

 

Priority #: 4     Education

 

The Committee will receive reports and review information regarding education, including mechanisms for improving the quality of education and for improving graduation rates.  The Committee will review opportunities for vocational and medical field training and will also receive a report on the new Wind River Job Corps Center.

 

Priority #: 5     Law enforcement and juvenile justice

 

The Committee will consider issues relating to law enforcement, jurisdiction, juvenile justice and domestic violence. The Committee will also receive a report from the Indian Law and Order Commission.

 

Priority #: 6     Promotion of Intergovernmental Relationships

 

The Committee will work to facilitate and foster communication and strong working relationships among State, Tribal and local entities and pursue opportunities for encouraging economic growth and well-being for citizens on the Reservation and in neighboring communities.

 

Tentative Meeting Schedule:

 

The Committee typically schedules two or three 1-day meetings during the year.  The first meeting is tentatively scheduled for June 2014 on the Wind River Indian Reservation.
